Tying the SPARKLING LEADEYE MINNOW

SPARKLING LEADEYE MINNOW

Photographs By Chris Windram

Welcome to the fifth edition of the SaltwaterFlies.Com Fly Tying Theatre! In these pages we hope to bring you tying instructions for some of our favorite saltwater flies. Here are my instructions for making the Sparkling Leadeye Minnow.

Recipe:

Hook: Mustad 34007; #1/0.
Thread: Danville Flymaster; Fluorescent Yellow.
Wing: White bucktail and fl. chartreuse bucktail.
Flash: Polarflash; Green Pearl (or Krystal Flash).
Eyes: Lead eyes, prepainted, size medium.
Head: E-Z Shape Sparkle Body; Pearl and Fluorescent Chartreuse.
Color Variations: Olive/White, Tan/White, Gray/White (and others).

STEP 1
Firmly fasten the hook in the vise. Create two "bumps" of thread about 1/8" to 3/16" behind the hook eye. The larger the lead eyes, or the larger the hook size, the farther I place these bumps from the hook eye. These bumps provide a structure which "cradles" the lead eyes.

STEP 2
Tie in the lead eyes on top of the hook using figure eight wraps until the eyes are secure. Add a drop of lacquer to the thread wraps as you complete the tie-in of the eyes; your thread turns will drive the lacquer deep into the thread base and help the lead eyes to stay securely fastened.

STEP 3
Tie in a clump of white bucktail in front of the lead eyes, on "top" of the hook. Since the weight of the lead eyes is on top of the hook shank, the completed fly will be balanced so that the hook point rides up.

STEP 4
Lash the bucktail clump down behind the lead eyes. Now the bucktail lays parallel to the hook shank.

STEP 5
Rotate the vise, or invert the hook in the vise so that the hook point is up. Tie in a few strands of Polarflash.

STEP 6
Tie in another clump of bucktail in front of the lead eyes. Pay attention not to crimp the hair too tightly at the rear of the tie-down point; this can make the hair flare unnaturally. Decrease tension slightly as you wrap toward the lead eyes; then increase to full thread tension as you return to the hook eye. Adding a drop of lacquer midway through tying in this hair clump will saturate the thread as before to create a more durable fly.

STEP 7
After allowing the lacquer to dry for two or three minutes, the leadeye minnow is now ready to be coated with E-Z Shape Sparkle Body.
