Saltwater Flies Mainpage | Chris Windram's Saltwater Fly Museum
A simple Bunny Fly is one of the "secrets" of some top anglers worldwide. No other fly matches the breathing and pulsating action that this style of Bunny Fly has in the water. We have used this fly extensively for a wide range of species, and it is by far one of the most important flies in our box. If you tie these for yourself, you can vary the size, and make them in a broad range of colors for a huge variety of species ranging from brown trout to barracuda. Our "Midnight Eel" pattern is one that we have fished effectively for Striped Bass, Tarpon, Snook, Northern Pike, and many other predators that strike dark flies - the "Moonlight" Eel is simply the same fly in all-white. See below for some important tips on fishing the Midnight & Moonlight Eel.

The Bunny Fly (Midnight & Moonlight Eel) is tied on the Mustad Signature Series C68S "Tarpon" stainless steel hook for strength and durability - this strong hook is one of the key components of this fly because we often choose it when big fish are around. In New England where we frequently fish, the dark version of this pattern is a very important night fly for striped bass, but in addition to fishing this fly anywhere that stripers are found at night, one "trick" we have used many times is fishing this fly in the daytime for stripers in ponds and estuaries. Stripers found in the daytime in ponds, backwaters, and estuaries with little current or water movement are often "laid-up"; resting and not feeding. While these fish may refuse fly after fly, the Midnight Eel almost always gets some interest from these fish, and it is one of the few patterns that we have used to good effect in these situations. Estuary systems often feature a wide variety of small, dark baits in contrast the the prolific schools of small silvery baitfish found oceanside, and this may account for the effectiveness of this fly in estuary fishing situations. The Moonlight Eel is an all-white version of the same fly, and is one which we use day or night in a wide variety of fishing situations - a white fly is often used effectively for fishing at night when the moon is in the sky. This pattern is approximately 4 inches (10 cm) long - tied by Blake Davis. Similar patterns: The Bonito Bunny.
