The Cape Cod Sand Eel is a version of a "Half & Half", or "Deep Deceiver" fly,
also frequently referred to as a "DeClouser". This combination of Deceiver/Clouser Minnow
tied in this particular style with a slim, sparse profile was originally designed to imitate
the sand eels of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
From the sandy beaches and big tides of Cape Cod Bay to the rips of Monomoy,
striped bass and other gamefish prowl the shoals, shorelines, and flats in pursuit of the
large sand eels that inhabit these waters. The Cape Cod Sand Eel features a slim
profile to mimic the size and shape of the naturals, along with flexible hackle tails
which create a swimming action in the water. Lead eyes get the fly down where fish can
find it. This is a killer pattern for Cape Cod and the sand shoals of Martha's Vineyard and
Nantucket. Though originally designed for Cape Cod waters, it has been
found enormously successful not only for striped bass and other New England secies,
but also for a variety of other gamefish worldwide.

Many thanks to Nate Amendola of Great Point Fly Fishing who ties the "Cape Cod Sand Eel" fly for us on the #1/0 Tiemco 811S hook. We offer some general Tying Instructions for an earlier version this fly which appeared on our site - please click the link to view the tying instructions. Fishing the Cape Cod Sand Eel fly: This is an excellent pattern for sight casting to striped bass on the flats, as well as a good searching pattern when fished from a boat in areas with tidal rips and strong current. When flats fishing for moving or feeding stripers, cast the fly well ahead of schooling or individual fish, then move the fly quickly using fast strips as the fish approach. Allowing the fly to settle to the bottom occasionally may help the fly to make a little "puff" of sand when the fly is stripped again, often triggering a strike. There are times when the fastest retrieve is needed to attract the attention of cruising bass, but often a medium fast strip with little or no pause between strips will draw the strikes. Bass on the flats can be spooky; be patient and persistent and you will eventually be rewarded with good fish.
