Flies tied with circle hooks are becoming increasingly popular among folks who tie for themselves, but it sure is hard to find circle hook flies if you don't tie. Our Circle Deep Minnow is the answer! This is a classic style of fly with a modern twist. Flies tied with circle hooks will set themselves in the fish's mouth with a minimum of effort...hooks fish securely in the corner of the mouth, and helps to avoid deep-hooking. Fish hooked on circle hooks rarely escape once hooked, even if there is slack in the line!

The Circle Deep Minnow is approximately 3 1/2 inches (8.5 cm) long. Tied in the United States by Blake Davis.

Fishing the Circle Deep Minnow: Present the fly as you would a similar pattern in situations calling for a Clouser-type weighted fly. Setting the hook with a circle hook fly is slightly different from the usual technique: when the fish takes the fly, keep the rod low while holding onto the line, and allow the line to tighten. Don't pull sharply on the line, or set the hook with the rod tip! As the fish turns with the fly, the fly will come to the corner of the fish's mouth and catch there. When the line comes fully tight, the fish should be hooked and you can then raise the rod and allow the fish to run. Be sure to flatten the barbs on circle fly hooks; a circle hook with a barb can be extremely difficult to remove from the fish.
