All of our fly tying materials are selected for quality and value. These are the same
materials that are used to produce many of the flies
that you see in the pages of Saltwaterflies.Com. Although many of these materials are also useful for freshwater tiers, we
feel that this is the first catalog designed specifically with the saltwater tier in mind.
We are adding photos of our products to the catalog pages as often as we

Mustad Hooks: We stock a wide
range of Mustad traditional and Signature series saltwater fly Hooks. For more info, visit the

Mustad is the world's largest manufacturer of fish hooks.
Mustad S71 S: This Signature Series version of the 34007 is
Mustad's new "All Around" stainless steel saltwater streamer hook. 2x heavy, 1x long, needle point. Very
nice hook for bonefish flies, Clousers, Deceivers, and other standard saltwater patterns.
Note: Mustad is revising some of their Signature Series hooks for 2009 - the S71S is to be
discontinued and replaced with the "S71SZ-34007" - this hook is available now in limited quantities, and features the new
"ZSteel Finish" - instead of a stainless steel hook, the S71SZ-34007 is a carbon composite hook with an anti-corrosive
finish asserted to be 8 times more corrosion resistant than stainless steel. These new hooks feature the same dimensions
and proportions as the S71S, and they appear to us
to be made of a similar material as many of the Japanese made saltwater fly hooks like the Tiemco and Daiichi.
According to Mustad this new material provides an increase in strength, sharpness, and corrosion resistance.
The color of the finish is a little darker and less shiny than the traditional bright stainless steel, which may
be preferable for some flies. The addition of the "34007" number to the model number indicates that
this hook substitutes for the original stainless 34007 hook - Mustad has not been entirely clear yet as to whether the
34007 will continue to be manufactured. One final note - #3/0 and #4/0's will not be available in the "Z" series hook. |

Mustad C68 S Stainless steel Tarpon hook. Similar shape as the
7766 (shown above), but made from stainless steel. 2x heavy, needle point. Good for tarpon
flies, deceivers, epoxy albacore and bonito flies, etc. 25 hooks per pack.

Mustad 10827 BLN Hoodlum: The Mustad 10827 "Hoodlum" hooks are tough
hooks for tough fish! 4x strong wire, needle sharp "Opti-Angle" point and a black nickel finish, the Hoodlums have been popular
with progressive anglers in Australia and other areas where cutting edge flyrodders are taking the
sport to new levels by challenging some of the world's toughest gamefish. The #2/0 measures
1 inch (26 mm) long with a 7/16" (11 mm) gap. If you need a massively heavy duty hook

Mustad C51S BLN: This freshwater circle hook style
by Mustad is one that many anglers have been asking for. Non-offset circle streamer/nymph
hook with a Black Nickel finish. Very similar to the Mustad C71S, but
available in smaller sizes (and featuring the black nickel finish). Pictured are sizes #10-16;
size #10 is approx 5/8" (17 mm) long; size #16 is approx. 3/8" (11 mm) long.

Mustad CK74S Stainless steel popper hook with a kink shank.
This Signature series hook replaces Mustad's old, discontinued kink-shank stainless popper
hook; the CK74S is stronger, sharper, and more reliable than the old hook The #1/0 hook is 1 7/8" long. Similar styles:
Wapsi Saltwater Popper Hook. Note: Mustad was telling us that they would be discontinuing
this hook as of January, 2009, however they are still listing it in their catalog.
All sizes listed below are still in stock, and we hope to continue to carry these,

Varivas 990 Series hooks: Japanese made Varivas 990S series
carbon and stainless steel hooks represent the ultimate in sharpness. With a unique modern

Eizo Maruhashi, with high-power carbon used for extra strength - you can hook and land large

Varivas 990 Carbon The following report is from The Gold Cup
Tournament 2000, where qualifying fish were tarpon over 5ft long, and in excess of 60lbs:
Using the new VARIVAS
990 hooks, the popular Japanese tarpon tournament champion, Eizo Maruhashi had "takes"
from seven fish during the tournament, and amazingly landed five. The astonished
Eizo says "these hooks are unbelievable - the penetrating power is awesome...even against
the armour-plated mouth of the tarpon." T. Patrick Ford Jr., chairman of the Golden Fly Invitational Tarpon Tournament reported:
"During the (Golden Fly) tournament, I had eight bites and caught seven fish which is very rare in
tarpon fishing. Usually, landing one in ten is a good ratio. I truly believe that the
VARIVAS 990 Carbon is the best tarpon hook I have ever used." This hook in the #1 is our favorite for small Toad flies.

TMC 800S Tiemco's extra strong, 1x short, chemically sharpened
needle point hook. Very sharp, very high quality hook. Preferred by many

Gamakatsu SL12 Bluewater Fly Hook The SL12 Bluewater fly hook by
Gamakatsu is an excellent choice for all sorts of flies for medium to large sized saltwater
gamefish. This is the hook for offshore decievers / bucktails, Trey Comb's Sea Habit type
flies, and most larger streamers. As best as we can determine, this is the same hook
as the Trey Combs Big Game hook, which is also made by
Gamakatsu, but distributed by Spirit River. One item of note; there is a size #1/0
available in the SL12 series, a notable omission from the Trey Combs series.

is the Finesse Wide Gap hook. This short-shank, light wire hook with
oversize gap is an excellent choice for situations where a strong, lightweight
hook is required. Many tiers have been requesting this hook for use in

Gamakatsu SL45 Bonefish Hook Another recent innovation from Gamakatsu
is the SL45 bonefish fly hook. Straight eye, forged, sproat bend, with a black
finish, the SL12 is nicely balanced for bonefish flies. According to Gamakatsu, "the size 10 is
small enough for those really finicky Bones but the 2x strong high carbon steel shank is strong
enough to keep them out of the mangroves once they’re hooked." We suggest caution if
you plan to be fishing over a lot of rocky bottoms, or when fishing for very large bones - this
is still a light wire hook when compared to traditional styles. This hook is super sharp.

Gamakatsu Spinnerbait: The Gamakatsu "Spinnerbait" hook is a popular
choice for Crease flies, Siliclones, poppers, large squid flies & snake flies and more. Nice proportions
with a large gap make this a useful hook for those styles mentioned above.
The Gamakatsu catalog reference #'s for this hook are 55012-5. Very similar
to the SP11-3L3H, but with slightly finer wire for the same size. The
length of the #3/0 hook is 1 15/16" (50 mm), the gap of the #3/0 measures 5/8" (16 mm).

Gamakatsu Siwash: Siwash style hooks are a traditional style for
teaser flies & bucktails, and these Siwash hooks by Gamakatsu are the finest that we
have seen. These hooks make a nice choice for snake flies, deceivers, etc.
Large eye, long point, perfect bend. The Gamakatsu catalog reference #'s for this hook are 53009-53014.
The length of the #2/0 hook is 1 9/16" (40 mm), the gap of the #2/0 measures slightly less
than 5/8" (16 mm). Per pack quantities: #2 and #1: 8 per pack; #1/0-4/0: 6 hooks/pack.

Gamakatsu Live Bait (Light Wire) with Ring: Gamakatsu's Live
Bait Light Wire with Ring is one of our new favorites for tube flies. To rig these for a
tube fly, just double the end of the tippet with a surgeon's loop, insert the loop through
the tube, then loop-to-loop onto the ring of these hooks. These hooks feature
a solid ring welded to the eye (not a split ring). No snelling, and the doubled line
helps prevent chafe inside the tube when landing tough fish. We have been using these
hooks successfully now for three seasons on tubes for bonito and little tunny, and they are far
and away our first choice now for small tube flies. Slightly offset bend hooks and holds fish
well. Smallest sizes would be very nice for some freshwater tubes, medium and large sizes for
salmon, steelhead, bonito, etc. These are not overly large hooks; the #1 is approximately
3/4" (2.1cm) long. For really tough fish, try the Live

We have been using the Tiemco Ceramic Hook Hone successfully for several years now. This hook
hone quickly puts a fine point on any hook using the flat side or one of the various
sized grooved channels. Ceramic lasts far longer than other types of stones (practically forever), and won't rust

Thread
We offer several kinds of thread for different applications.
Ultra Thread is a new favorite - the most popular size of
this thread (UTC 140) is smaller in size than the Danville "Flat Waxed Nylon"
that we have used with great success for many years, but has the same "flat" shape,
and seems to be just as strong - we have switched to this thread for much of our
own fly tying, and we have some of the other sizes of UTC thread as well, including the
70, 210, and 280 denier. Regarding the "Denier" sizes: the larger the number, the
thicker the thread, so 140 denier is thicker than 70 denier.
"GSP" or Gel-spun polyethylene is super strong stuff like the earlier
kevlar threads - this is the same material
as the popular modern gel-spun fly line backings and spinning lines.
Danville's Flymaster 6/0 is a small, fine, traditional thread for precision tying.
Fine thread makes for more evenly finished
heads, but it breaks more easily than heavier threads.
Danville's Flymaster Plus (3/0) is a heavy thread used for spinning hair
and anywhere thread buildup is not a consideration.
Danville's Flat Waxed Nylon is good for tiers who need
a strong thread without too much buildup. This thread lies flat, and is
strong enough for spinning hair, or tying very large flies.
Monofilament thread is typically used where it will seem invisible under an
epoxy coating.

Griffin Supreme Ceramic Bobbins If your bobbin has
a tendency to cut or fray the tying thread, then try one of Griffin's Ceramic Bobbins! These
bobbins feature Ceramic-lined thread tubes that allow
the tier to use maximum thread tension without danger of fraying or thread breakage.
